RAG vs Traditional Site Search: Which One Should a Business Website Use in 2026?

Traditional search is still the right default for many business websites because it is fast, deterministic, and easier to maintain. But once content gets deeper, users often need answers, not just document lists.

RAG becomes valuable when you need semantic retrieval across policy docs, service knowledge, product specs, and long-form resources. It can reduce support load and improve self-serve discovery if retrieval quality is tightly controlled.

The main trade-off is reliability versus flexibility. Standard search gives predictable ranking; RAG adds conversational utility but introduces grounding and governance requirements.

For most teams, a hybrid pattern works best: strong keyword search for navigation and RAG for intent-heavy questions where summarization saves real time.
